Optimising Mozilla Firefox for MapQuest

Why should I "optimise" Firefox for MapQuest, and what does this require?
Firefox's settings may be preventing you from seeing MapQuest maps and other images. Optimising, in this case, means to change the setting(s) associated with viewing images.

What Firefox settings are involved?
An image control feature in Firefox lets you decide if Firefox downloads Web page images. If you are not seeing any images, this setting may be turned off. Another related feature lets you tell Firefox to go ahead and download images, but only if they're physically located on the current Web site's server(s). If you are seeing some--but not all--images on a Web page, it might be because you have this feature turned on.

How can I tick/change Firefox image settings?
To tick your settings, do the following:
  1. Click on the "Tools" menu at the top of the browser window
  2. Click "Options..."
  3. Click the "Web Features" icon on the left side of the "Options" window
  4. Verify that the box labelled "Load Images" is ticked
  5. Verify that the box labelled "for the originating website only" is NOT ticked
  6. Click "OK" in the bottom right corner of the "Options" window
If your settings required no changes, then you should be able to view MapQuest maps.

However, if you had to tick the box labelled "Load Images" or if you had to un-tick the box labelled "for the originating website only", then you will probably not be able to see MapQuest map images until you refresh or restart your Firefox browser.

How are these settings related to viewing maps on MapQuest?
One of the user-configurable settings--"Load Images"--is pretty simple to explain. When unticked (turned off), Firefox just doesn't download any images when viewing Web pages. No images means no maps.

The second option discussed limits the images Firefox loads to those from "the originating website only". If all the images displayed on MapQuest's Web pages were hosted on the same server and same Internet domain, then there would be no problem with viewing the site; all images would belong to "the originating website". Because of the complexity of rendering maps and generating driving directions, however, MapQuest relies on several specialised servers to provide the content you see on our pages. So it's typical to be browsing a page on the MapQuest site where most of the content on a given page comes from the .co.uk domain but the map images come from another domain, like mq-mapgend.websys.aol.com.

With the "originating website only" box ticked (turned on), Firefox will block the images coming from the map servers. Instead of a map, you'll see a box where the map should be.

Mapping and Routing

How does MapQuest recognise an address?
We locate addresses through a process known as "geocoding." MapQuest uses a wide variety of information from many sources to provide geocoding, mapping and routing services. We produce some of this information, and some of it comes from third party sources. Find out more about our data sources.

How do I turn the road sign icons for my directions off or on?
The road signs you see to the left of the step-by-step maneouvers on the Directions results page are graphical aids included to enhance the text of your route. Many MapQuest users find them helpful. You can easily turn off the road sign feature on the "Language and Settings" form, which can be reached via the "Language and Settings" link in the navigation bar at the bottom of any MapQuest page, or by clicking here.

How do I keep my settings private when using a public or shared computer?
To save the changes you make just for your visit, choose "When browser closes". If you choose "Never", your settings will be stored until your cookies are cleared.

What are "recent searches"?
Frequent MapQuest users often create routes to and from the same address(es). To make it easier, MapQuest saves your ten most recent address searches. You don't have to do anything special... it happens automatically!

You can take advantage of this time-saving feature from several MapQuest pages:
  • On the Map form page you can generate a map from a recent search by selecting one from the right side of the form.
  • On the Map results page recent searches are available beneath the map in a dropdown menu for creating a route to or from the mapped address.
  • On the Directions form page recent searches are available via a dropdown menu at the bottom of the Starting Address and Ending Address forms.

How do I clear my recent searches?
For privacy purposes - especially when using a public computer - you may choose to clear your recent searches when you've finished using MapQuest. You can do so as follows:

  • On the top right side of the Map form page, click on the "Clear All" link next to the "Your Recent Searches" heading.
  • On the Directions form, Clear searches is provided as an option in the recent searches dropdown. Selecting it will display a popup box to confirm deletion.
  • Recent searches are also listed in the recent searches tab in the Language and Settings page. There is an option to select all the recent searches and delete them.
